Bathroom renovations can look simple on paper, but small decisions can create big cost blowouts and delays. Here are 5 common traps we see in Melbourne bathroom renos—and how to avoid them.

1) Underestimating waterproofing (and who’s responsible)

Waterproofing is one of the most critical parts of a bathroom renovation—and one of the easiest places for corners to be cut. If it fails, the damage can be hidden for months and become very expensive to fix.

Make sure waterproofing is done by a qualified, insured tradesperson and documented.
Confirm exactly what areas are being waterproofed (shower, full floor, upturns, niches).
Don’t proceed to tiling until waterproofing has cured and been checked.

2) Choosing fixtures before confirming rough-in locations

Tapware, vanities, toilets and showers all have specific rough-in requirements. If you select fixtures late—or change your mind mid-way—you can end up paying for rework (plumbing, wall framing, waterproofing and tiling).

Lock in your key fixtures early and confirm specs with your builder/plumber.
Double-check vanity depth, mirror cabinet clearance, and shower screen sizes.

3) Not planning ventilation (and then fighting mould later)

A beautiful bathroom can be ruined quickly by poor ventilation. Steam and moisture lead to mould, peeling paint, swollen cabinetry and musty smells—especially in Melbourne winters.

Use an appropriately sized exhaust fan and duct it to the outside (not into the roof space).
Consider a fan with a run-on timer or humidity sensor.

4) Falling for the cheapest quote (missing scope = variations)

Bathroom quotes can look similar until you compare what’s actually included. The cheapest quote often leaves out key items—then makes it up later through variations.

Ask for a clear inclusions list (demolition, waterproofing, tiling extent, fixtures, electrical, painting).

Trends come and go, but a bathroom layout has to work every day. Poor clearances, awkward door swings, and cramped showers are common regrets.

Check clearances around the toilet, vanity and shower entry.
Mock it up: tape the layout on the floor before you commit.
